What is A Lector and What Do They Do?
A lector is a fully initiated and an actively practicing Catholic who proclaims the first and the second readings of the Mass. When no deacon is present, they also proclaim the Prayers of the Faithful. The lector must believe that Sacred Scripture is the Word of God and have deep respect for God’s presence in that Word. In addition, lectors have a deep reverence for and devotion to Holy Scripture and they are called to a deep relationship with God so that His word reaches the heart and soul of the congregation.
Why Should I Consider Becoming A Lector? Being a lector is a great way to deepen your appreciation of Sacred Scripture and help your fellow parishioners clearly and prayerfully hear the Word of God.
How Do I Become A Lector? In order to become a lector, you must complete a mandatory training course (held in-person in the church) which will teach you more about the role of a lector, as well as give you practice with proclaiming the readings. Whom Can I Contact for More Information?
